Interscholastic Mathematics Competition Rules - Junior High
Rules of Competition
-
Participation and Team Structure
- Each school will select one team composed of eight students.
- The Junior High Interscholastic Mathematics Competition is designed for students in Grades 7 and 8.
- Any student in a grade higher than 8th is not eligible for this competition.
- No team may be comprised of more than four 8 th grade students.
- Each team member will participate in all three categories: Arithmetic/Computational, Word Problems and Relays.
-
Team Lineups
- Advisor will list the team members on the team score sheet. The team sheet will include each student's name and current grade level.
- Alternates' scores will be listed on a score sheet and will count as an individual score (for medal contention), but will not count towards the team score.
- If a school has more than one team, please create two distinct teams and submit a roster for each team before the first competition of the season. If a legitimate situation (illness, school function, testing etc) causes both of your teams to become short of the eight members, and not enough alternates are available, you may move students to make one complete team for that competition. At future competitions the students will return to their original team.
-
Materials
- Scrap paper will be provided by GV BOCES.
- Each participant should bring their own sharpened pencils and their own calculators.
- No graph paper, compasses, rulers, mathematical tables or other devices will be allowed, except where special arrangements have been made for handicapped students (on section 2 - Word Problems, scientific calculators may be used).
-

- After the signal to begin is given, the timing of the event will begin.
- If for any reason a problem must be dropped, no replacement will be made and no credit will be given for any answer to a problem thus discarded.

Proctoring
- Each team will be actively proctored by at least one advisor at all times.
- Any suspicion of unfair play must immediately be brought to the coordinator's attention.
- Any appeals of grading or scoring must be made to the coordinator prior to the completion of the competition.
-
Marking the Answers
- At the end of each event, answer papers will be collected. The papers will be taken to the scoring area where the advisors will correct them.
- No advisor may correct an answer sheet of one of his or her team members.
- Answers must appear in the appropriate space on the answer sheet. Answers written elsewhere will receive no credit. Answers are either right or wrong. There is no partial credit.
- If a specific answer form is required for any problem, the answer(s) for that problem must be written in the required form.
- Team sheets are filled out after each set of questions has been scored.
-
Ranking and Awards
- There will be one awards ceremony following the last meet. The awards will be determined as such:
- After each meet, the schools team total will be recorded. After the final meet, the team scores for all meets will be added together. The highest total team points will determine the top three scoring schools.
- The first, second and third ranked teams will be awarded trophies.
- The winning individuals will be the highest scoring students based on the best two out of three meets.
- The first, second and third high scoring students from both seventh and eighth grades will be awarded medals.
