Program Curriculum
This program is offered to adults who wish to take their state licensing examination for Practical Nursing and is taught in two semesters. Below gives an outline of this program.
First Semester

Course Descriptions:

Anatomy and Physiology
The stude of human structure and function enables the practical nurse to apply basic concepts of homeostasis involving anatomy and physiology of normal body systems. The Student is able to integrate basic medical terminology into the study of the human body.

Foundations of Nursing
Includes discussion of basic nursing clinical skills, the history of nursing, the health care system, therapeutic communication, physical assessment and the nursing process, and legal and ethical aspects of nursing. An introduction to medical terminology is initiated and students complete Nursing Lab Skill Competencies such as basic skills of bed making, bed bathing, vital signs, and range of joint movement.

Basic Nutrition and Diet Therapy
Concepts of basic normal nutrition and specific diet therapy for individual medical conditions are discussed. Nutrition concepts are also integrated into applied patient care. Socio-cultural nutritional considerations are considered with respect to modifications of traditional dietary needs as they apply to diverse populations.

Human Growth and Development
The study of the life cycle of man from infancy to old age, with special emphasis on Erickson's Developmental Levels. Included are nursing implications for health teaching, counseling, and patient care. In addition to normal geriatric care, the student is introduced to the death and dying process, including the concept of hospice care.

Pharmacology I
Considers all aspects of medication preparation and administration, including pharmacology mathematics/dosage calculations. Initial assessment of math skills determines individual needs with respect to review and practice of sills necessary for safe calculation of medication dosage. Clinical lab time is allotted for practice of drug preparation and administration, including oral and parenteral medications.

Pharmacology II
Introduces the concept of medication information in regard to classifications, interactions, contraindications, side effects, and incorporating the nursing process. The Core section begins with the basics, Introduction to Pharmacology, then progressively adds the most common groups of medications, such as Antibiotics, Pain Medications, Anti-Diabetic Drugs, and Diuretics.

Medical/Surgical Nursing
Incorporates advanced nursing skills and concepts necessary to care for adults who are hospitalized with common illnesses; or populations in the Skilled Care Settings. Medication preparation and administration, as well as nutrition and diet therapy, are integrated with this course of study/clinical practice. A review of major drug classifications and actions, and nursing implications of common side effects. Pharmacology principles are also integrated with Maternal/Child, Pediatric and Mental Health Nursing courses of study.

Maternal/Child Health Nursing -
Introduces the student to the nursing care of the childbearing family throughout the life reproductive cycle. Normal physical, emotional, intellectual, social growth and development from conception to the postpartum period are discussed.

Pediatric Nursing
Includes nursing concepts to guide the student in providing care for the ill child. Growth and Development is emphasized when assessing, and planning care, as well as, devising diversional activities for the hospitalized child.

Mental Health Nursing
Introduces mental health concepts including components of personality, sources of stress and anxiety, and major mental disorders. Substance abuse and the addictive personanlity are also discussed within this course of study.

Community Health Nursing
Introduces the concept of community health nursing, including home health nursing, rehabilitation, long term care, hospice, as well as amalgamation of program content.
